What Are Engineering PDH Requirements?
Professional Development Hours (PDH) are the unit most US states use to measure continuing education for licensed professional engineers. One hour of qualifying education equals one PDH credit. Most states require 15โ30 PDH hours per renewal cycle to maintain an active PE license.
Unlike some professions, the majority of state engineering boards do not require courses or providers to be formally pre-approved. Engineers are responsible for selecting courses relevant to their practice area and maintaining documentation. A few states โ Florida, Michigan, and New Jersey โ have specific provider approval requirements. PDHhub holds active approvals in all three (#0009623, #50-32681, #24GP00051100).
PDHhub courses are accepted in most US states under the self-directed model, and approvals are actively pending in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, and Indiana.
Understanding Engineering PDH Requirements
Engineering PDH requirements vary significantly across states โ from total hours and renewal frequency to ethics mandates and provider approval rules.
Most States: 30 PDH Every 2 Years
The most common requirement is 30 PDH hours over a two-year renewal cycle. States including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, and many others follow this model. Some states like Texas and North Carolina use 15 PDH annually instead.
Ethics PDH Requirements
Several states mandate specific ethics PDH hours. Florida requires 1 ethics hour, New Jersey requires 2 hours, Arkansas and Oklahoma each require 1 hour, and Louisiana requires 1 hour. These cannot be substituted with general technical course hours.
Provider Pre-Approval: The Exceptions
Most states operate on a self-directed model โ no provider approval needed. Florida, Michigan, and New Jersey are the key exceptions requiring board-approved providers. PDHhub holds active approvals in all three states.
Personal Renewal Deadlines
Many states tie renewal deadlines to the individual licensee's birth month or original licensure date rather than a fixed calendar date. States including Texas, California, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin use personal deadlines โ requiring active individual tracking.
Multi-State Licensees
Engineers licensed in multiple states can typically use the same PDH courses across all states under the self-directed model. PDHhub's unlimited membership means multi-state PEs pay one fee regardless of how many state requirements they need to satisfy.
Pending Approvals: What to Know
PDHhub is actively pursuing board approvals in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, and Indiana. Engineers in these states should verify current provider acceptance with their board before completing hours. PDHhub will update this page as approvals are confirmed.
